Clinical Observation of Intussusception in Infancy and Childhood

Abstract
|
|
|
Intussusception is the one of frequent and emergency sugical conditions in infancy and childhood.
The clinical study of 106 cases of intussusception, who were admitted at the St. Mary¢¥s Hospital during the past five years from JAnuary 1967 to December 1972, was reviewed.
The results of this study were as follows;
1) In age incidence, 68.9% of the patients were under one year of age, and 83.1% of the patients were under two years of age.
2) Male were affected more often than female, the ratio was 2.9:1.
3) The incidence in Spring was higher than other seasons(40.5%). And also in artificial fed infants the incidence was higher than others(55.15).
4) Etiologic causes were found only in 7.6% of them and rest of them(92.4%) were not determined.
5) Of 106 cases, 21 cases(19.8%) had upper respiratory infection on admission.
6) The most of patients was well nourished and their body weight were over 76th percetile of Korea normal infants and children in 58.5% of them.
7) In analysis of the pathoanatomical type, the order of frequency was ileocecal(36.9%), ileocolic(35.0%), ileoileal(7.5%), cecocolie(7.5%), colocolic(5.7%).
8) The cardinal symptoms and signs were current jeliy stool(88.5%), vomiting(75.5%), intermittent abdominal pain(73.6%) and papalble mass(68.95). In location of papalble mass, the most common region was right upper quadrant(46.7%).
9) The 81 cases, admitted within 24 hours after the onset, 64 cases(79%) was successfully treated by hydrostatic pressure reduction and rest of them(21.0%) was managed by surgical manual reduction. but 6 cases, admitted after 72 hours from the onset were treated by segmental resection.
10) the reccurrence after the first reduction was occured in 3.8% of them and the other complication were noted in 7.8% of cases. The mortality was 3.7% in our all of cases.
